Hazy IPAs are almost always described as “vaguely tropical-tasting.” Interchangeable words like dank, pine, mango, pineapple, and citrus are thrown around in their presence, illustrated on can art, and listed on Instagram captions whenever a brewery drops its latest hazy. While this may seem redundant, it makes sense: The hops most often used in hazy IPAs carry these notes.
There are a lot of compounds that contribute to how hops smell and inevitably taste when made into beers, like sulfur-containing thiols, terpenes (also found in cannabis), and bitterness-imparting alpha acids. That said, there is no single source from which hops draw all their aroma or flavor. It also comes down to how the hops are used in the brewing process. If added in the dry-hopping stage, hops have a much better shot at expressing their natural terpenes and aromas, as some compounds are broken down in the boiling stage, and won’t be detectable in the final product. Meanwhile, adding hops early on in the boiling stage will extract their much-needed bittering elements, and adding them a bit later in the boil will impart more flavor. It’s all rather complicated, and there’s still a lot of research that needs to be done to fully understand hops. Nonetheless, craft brewing has come a long way in recent years, and these are the hops that show up most frequently in today’s hazy IPAs.
Citra
This is the undisputed king of all hazy hops. Citra is the hop equivalent of adding butter and salt to a dish — most of the time, it’s only going to make things taste better, and chefs would rather you didn’t know how much they actually use. They appear in a comical amount of hazies on the market, but for good reason. In the raw, Citra unmistakably smells like — dare I say it — cat urine. But in beer, Citra takes on incredible dank, tropical fruit aromas, with enough bitter undertones to give hazy IPAs the bite they need to be drinkable without being overly sweet. Even with so many different breweries offering single-hop Citra beers, they all taste different: When used with different yeast strains, malt bills, and water types, Citra expresses itself in many ways. Like with a lot of these varieties, it’s all about how you milk them.
Mosaic
Mosaic is dank, dank, dank thanks to a heavy dose of myrcene, a terpene that lends itself to the musty, almost diesel fuel-esque quality associated with potent cannabis. A cross breed of Simcoe and Nugget, Mosaic is very blackcurrant and blueberry-heavy. The variatal also looks beautiful up close — tight-knit and organized.
Galaxy
Arguably the most famous Australian hop, it packs in notes of overripe guava — so much so that some single-hop Galaxy IPAs often taste like rotting fruit. Reminiscent of blue cheese at times, its funkiness either repels or attracts with a passion. Ultimately, this one works best when synthesized with other hop varieties.
El Dorado
El Dorado is another fantastically juicy hop. It holds up well on its own, but also mingles alongside other varieties with ease. In terms of flavor profile, it tastes like straight-up pineapple. El Dorado holds almost the same potential as Citra in flavor and versatility — it just doesn’t have as much clout.
Simcoe
Simcoe packs heavy aromas of peaches, dried turkish apricot, pine, and orange rind. Simcoe’s pine character is also great for bittering. To that end, it serves as the backbone for West Coast favorite,Pliny the Elder, but it’s equally versatile in other hazy IPAs.
Nelson Sauvin
Nelson, hailing from New Zealand, is commonly compared to Sauvignon Blanc for its heavy notes of white grapes, gooseberries, and fresh-cut grass. It’s an assertive hop, for sure, making it one to use with care — a little goes a long way.
Idaho 7
Idaho 7 exudes tangerine and marmalade notes. It’s a brewer’s secret weapon: As a homebrewer once told me, “if your beer ever feels a little off, dump some Idaho 7 in there and it fixes everything.” It can mellow out some of the other hops at work when used in tandem with them, but will also ride their coattails when used in small doses.
Amarillo
Amarillo is even higher in myrcene terpenes than Mosaic, to the point where the weed-esque dankness takes on the bitter, almost floral qualities of orange rind. It’s typically used as an aroma hop in late-boil or dry-hopping additions. Often compared to Cascade (which is responsible for Sierra Nevada Pale Ale’s grapefruit notes), this hop goes full frontal with its citrus qualities, and like Idaho 7, it works best in tandem with other hops.
Sabro
If all these hops were related, Sabro would be the wacky uncle. Its coconut-y profile is abundant, with notes of coconut cream and — damn, more coconut. For some, Sabro can be a bit too much, but it remains a popular choice for sweeter brews. And if you’re into Piña Colada-esque IPAs, this is one to spring for.
Vic Secret
This Australian hop is bursting with passionfruit notes. Similar to Galaxy in its overripeness with notes of rotting fruit or wild game — in a good way, trust me — it’s best used when piggybacking on a more foundational, solid hop like Citra.
Cashmere
Like the name entails, this guy brings some mouthfeel. Cashmere works well in the early boil, but like a lot of hops on this list, it shines in the late-hop, whirlpool stages. It’s commonly used in conjunction with fruited ales, as it hones in on lemon, lime, and honeydew melon-forward flavors. Now just 10 years old, Cashmere hops werereleased in 2013through Washington State University’s hop-breeding program.
Strata
Described by writer Nick Carr as the “new darling of craft brewers,” Strata has light diesel notes but gives way to a bouquet of tropical hits. Like a Hawaiian fruit basket of sorts, you’re going to taste fruit notes only native to the Polynesian islands and Southeast Asia. Strata’s definitively the new kid on the block: Its patent is still pending, and it didn’t hit the market until 2016 after a few successful test grows.

Trivia: Did you know that Japanese sake is actually a type of beer, not a wine? Your tongue has about 10,000 taste buds, so put them to good work and try a new beer! 85 to 90% of beer consumed in Canada is manufactured in Canada. How many industries can say the same thing? Canada has one of the highest beer taxes in the world. In Canada, beer has 3 times the economic impact of wine and spirits combined. The Canadian brewing industry has reduced its energy consumption by 58% since 1990, which is beneficial to the environment and saves costs.
Beer Ingredients: Beer is fat-free.
Barley Local breweries annually purchase 300,000 tonnes of Canadian malting barley. Malting is a process where the precious parts of a grain of cereal are awakened and used to create flavour, colour and mouth feel in beer. The malting process begins by soaking the grains in water for several days. This process (soaking) is designed to replace nature by providing the water and oxygen needed for the grain to grow. After several days, the grain is allowed to grow naturally under controlled conditions of temperature and humidity (germination). The last step in malting is warming the grain to reduce moisture, create a colour and flavour and stabilize the malt. Brewing barley in Canada is about 20% Of all the barley produced here and is considered a speciality crop. Other grains that can be used include wheat, rye, oats and sorghum. Each of them has advantages, but barley continues to be the majority of all grains used in the brewery. Even in wheat beer, the proportion of barley is generally higher than 50%. This is due to the reality that other grains are malted without pods and are difficult to filter on their own. Malt provides a spectrum of beer colour that goes from pale straw to black. The pale malt creates the lighter colour and flavours observed in the easier beers to drink and soak thirst while the dark malts are responsible for richer and more robust colours in wearers and stouts. A variety of caramel coloured malts use to have an impact on colour, but more so to create complex aromas and aromas in beer. Kilning is the source of almost all malt flavours in beer. Maillard Chemistry is the science of caramelization and explains the colour, flavour and aroma of malt.
Water Beer is 90% water. All waters are not created equal: the origin and treatment of water have an impact on the finished beer, both at the molecular and sensorial levels. Brewery masters often consider that the water used in the beer is "soft" or "hard". Hard water has higher levels of mineral content (usually calcium and magnesium) while fresh water is largely free of minerals. The fresh water allows a beer to gently enter the mouth and also extends the finish. Hard water, on the other hand, can increase the characteristics of the hop, arrive with distinct clarity and come out of your mouth quickly. Burton-upon-Trent in England is renowned for having the toughest brewing water in the world and due to its impact on the creation of Pale Ales and India Pale Ales has also created a unique word for re-mineralization. Burtonisation is now an accepted term in infusion for the addition of calcium sulphate and magnesium sulphate to the brewing water. In Canada, there are many places where water is hard. Many brewers filter their water before brewing. It is very important to remove chlorine, fluoride and any other component that can negatively affect the flavour of the beer.
Hop Hops must be boiled vigorously to extract the bitterness. Hops are cultivated between the 35th and 55th parallel in the northern and southern hemispheres because they require specific summer day lengths to produce cones. Hop plants can grow up to 6 meters in a year and quite often 30cm in a day. Most of the hops that are used in the brewery are grown and grown in the United States or Germany, but many other countries, including Canada, contribute to the overall world hops agriculture. Hop varieties were transported from Europe to the New World and planted by settlers. Descending strains of some of these plants can still be found wild in the countryside in climates where hops bloom. Low alpha acid hops are generally used to create fine flavours and are added very late in the brewing stage. Hops with higher alpha acids are considered bittering hops and are added very early in the kettle during boiling. Modern brewers often refer to IBUs as a measure of bitterness in beer. The International Bittering Unit (IBU) measures the remaining alpha-acids after boiling. The scale is normally from 0 to 100. Lighter beers will generally measure between 6-17 IBU, while North American APIs can often reach IBU over 60. Although this is a scientific measure, it does not measure perceived bitterness. For example, a high-malt beer may have an IBU of 80, but it can only be perceived as 40 because of the balance between malt and hops. The flflavoursnd aromas of hops are largely determined byterroir(impact of soil, water, time and sun). Brewers choose the type of hop they want based on the style of beer and whether the flavors and flavors will attract the interest of the beer drinker.
Yeast Most of the brewed yeasts belong to a family calledSaccharomyces. Ale yeasts work best at warmer temperatures and therefore take longer to ferment.Lager(a German word for aging) yeasts are best used at colder temperatures and fermentations take almost twice as long as ales. While many small brewers buy their yeast from reputable suppliers, large brewers actually propagate their own exclusive strains of pure yeast. Yeast is remarkably temperature sensitive and can create completely different beers with only a small temperature variation in the brewing process.
Other Ingredients Any carbohydrate (other than malt) is considered anadjunctin the brewing terms. This word is defined as analternative source. Ingredients like dried fruits and spices have been used for centuries to create flavor and aroma in beer. Examples include orange, coriander and non-malted wheat. Some beers use other grains such as rice and maize as a complement to malt. The goal behind these lighter flavored cereals is to create a beer with a lighter body and a softer taste. This brewing mode is designed to produce beers that are light and easy to drink.
Tasting and serving beer: When experimenting with taste-testing, try to take notes with a mechanical pencil, as the smell of a wood pencil can affect your perceptions of the beer in question. The head on the side of your glass? That is called "lacing" and is a sign of a clean glass and a good brew. Professional tasters may prefer their beer be presented in stemmed white wine glasses because of the shape: by holding the stem, the beer is not warmed up by the judge's hand, while the upward lip of the glass allows the beer's aromas to flow freely. Amber glass bottles provide excellent protection against light (natural and artificial) that interacts with hop compounds and can cause the beer to have a "skunky" taste. Beer with this quality is sometimes called "light struck" beer.
A little history: In history, the brewing of beer emerged around the same time that communities of nomadic tribes took up agriculture, growing cereals for subsistence. Brewing was a domestic art, practised mainly by women in their own homes for personal enjoyment and special occasions. Sumerians, the first great civilization of Mesopotamia, are well documented in their love of beer and the importance of beer in their ancient culture. There is documentation of diet beer brewed in ancient Sumer. It was called eb-la, which translates as "lessens the waist". The first brewer registered in Canada is the Jesuit brother Ambroise, who began making beer in 1646 after the founding of New France. A few years later, the Grand Intendant Jean Talon founded Quebec's first commercial brewery in Quebec City to reduce the colony's dependence on imported brandy. The brewery, inaugurated in 1688, was so successful that its beers were sold in the West Indies, making it the first Canadian beer ever exported. Louis Pasteur published "Beer Studies" in 1876, an essential document describing the causes of the spoilage of beer and suggestions for avoiding it. Beer was so important at the beginning of Canadian culture that at the time of Confederation in 1867 there was already a tradition of brewing established in the colonies. During the period of settlement in Canadian history, the tavern served as a place to have a pint, a meal and perhaps a bed to stay the night. But they also served as a gathering place for the community: where judges would hear complaints, politicians would ask for votes and preachers would convey their message. The first Canadian drinkers would have thought that the term "social drinking" was redundant: having a pint meant being among compatriots in a public drinking establishment. Canned beer gained consumer popularity with soldiers who had returned from World War II, familiar and comfortable with cans of their time abroad. The increased use of glasses has allowed bar guests to have a good overview of what they drank, a luxury not offered by old tin and terracotta cups. This has led to the decline in the popularity of the porter and to an increase in the popularity of pale ales and other varieties of light coloured beer. The historical dominance of beer in western Canada is partly explained by the influence of German-American brewers immigrating north to the prairie towns with the intention of serving thirsty customers.

IPAs are well-loved for their unique flavor profiles. Beer drinkers also love these ales because you only need a few to get the party started. But did you know you can enjoy IPAs even if you do not want a high ABV beer?
Session IPAs are lower in alcohol than traditional India pale ales. Yet, they still have all of those delicious IPA flavors.
What is a session IPA vs. an IPA? We are diving deep into this question in this guide, so keep reading for everything you need to know about IPAs, session beers, and session IPAs.
But First, What Is an IPA?
IPA stands for India pale ale. What defines this type of beer is its higher alcohol by volume (ABV), extended shelf life, and the secret ingredient: hops.
Hops are flowers that come from theHumulus lupulusplant. These plants are a member of the Cannabaceae family of plants. This plant family also includes cannabis and hemp as members.
Humulus lupulus plants are climbing vines. You can find them in hop gardens, where farmers train the plants to climb up trellises and strings hung over fields. Hops plants can grow as tall as 20-feet high.
The flavor of hops varies by species. But, typically, hops offer a bitter flavor to brews. Depending on the variety, hops can also offer floral, citrusy, or fruity flavors to beers.
In addition to being super tasty, hops have a long history of use as natural medicine. That is because hops have antibacterial properties. And these antibacterial properties explain why IPAs are so shelf stable.
Types of IPAs
Breweries use different hop plants to create the IPA variations we all know and love today. There are over a dozen different kinds of IPAs and IPA examples, including English and American IPAs.
But the three most popular types of IPAs are:
Hazy IPAs
Double or Imperial IPAs
Session IPAs
Hazy IPAs get their name from the fact that brewers do not filter these beers. But Imperial and session IPAs are determined based on the brew’s ABV.
Session Ales: Explained
Before we explain the Session IPA, we wanted to briefly mention session ales in general. This category of beer gets its name because you can have more than one per drinking “session.”
Session beers typically have ABVs of 5% or less. Often, though not always, session ales are also lower in calories, so you will not feel as full after knocking back a few.
Breweries can create session beers out of any type of brew. Pilsners, blondes, and lagers are all common types of session beers. But hefeweizens and pale ales can also be session beers.
We wanted to quickly note that you should not confuse a pale ale and an India pale ale. When it comes to a session pale ale vs. India pale ale (whether session or not), there is a pretty big difference in flavor profiles.
Session IPAs
Session IPAs are India pale ales with lower alcohol content than a traditional IPA. However, when it comes to session vs. IPA beers, session IPAs have higher ABVs than regular session brews.
You may be wondering: how is the India pale ale vs. session taste? Session IPAs offer lower ABVs without compromising on flavor.
Brewers still make these beers with hops. And this ingredient gives session IPAs the same floral, fruity, or citrusy flavors as regular IPAs.
What Is a Session IPA vs. an IPA?
By now, you should understand the difference between IPAs and regular beers and the distinction between regular beers and session beers. But how do session IPAs compare to regular IPAs?
Here are the top two ways session IPAs and non-session IPAs differ.
Alcohol Content
As mentioned, session IPAs have a lower ABV than regular IPAs. Traditional double IPAs typically have alcohol content ranging from 6%–8%. But some regular IPAs (usually triple IPAs) can have ABVs of over 10%.
On the other hand, the average session IPA beer contains 6.5% to 8% alcohol by volume.
This lower alcohol content could result in an overly-hoppy, less sweet brew. But session beer makers use a special brewing method to ensure session IPAs and traditional IPAs offer the same flavor profiles.
The Brewing Method
Remember how we said that session IPAs are just as tasty as higher ABV India pale ales? The reason these beers taste similar despite having different alcohol contents comes down to the way brewers make them.
Hops do not play a role in producing alcohol content. Instead, they are simply a flavoring ingredient added at the end of brewing.
The lower malt and grain content makes session IPAs lower in alcohol. To ensure the hops do not overpower the malt flavors, session beer brewers use a wider variety of malts to add depth and complexity.
Come Try Session Beers and IPAs at Rabbit Hop
So, what is a session IPA vs. an IPA? Session IPAs have lower ABVs and, often, fewer calories compared to traditional IPAs. But they are just as delicious and hoppy as your favorite traditional India pale ales.

Brewmeister Snake Venom
Brewmeister Armageddon
Koelschip Start the Future
BrewDog and Schorschbräu Strength in Numbers
Ζυθοποιία: BrewDog/Schorschbräu
Αλκοόλ:: 57.8%
BrewDog End Of History

Είναι δυνατόν να πουλήθηκε έναντι 503.300 δολαρίων στο eBay;
Την έκτη ημέρα είχε σπάσει το φράγμα των δύο χιλιάδων δολαρίων. Την έβδομη, 23 υποψήφιοι συμμετείχαν στη μάχη, φτάνοντας την προσφορά των 78 χιλιάδων δολαρίων. Μέχρι τις 11 Αυγούστου, με πάνω από 74.000 άτομα να παρακολουθούν τη δράση, έγινε η τελευταία από τις 157 προσφορές: 503.300 δολάρια ακριβώς. Ισχύει όμως τελικά η προσφορά;

This small nation is home to the biggest brewery in the world, as well as tiny, independent operations located on farmsteads, in old factories, and in cave-like casemates. “In Belgium, the magistrate has the dignity of a prince,” wrote Belgian poet Émile Verhaeren. “But by Bacchus, it is true that the brewer is king.”
So what makes Belgian beer so special? Let's dive in.
A brief history of Belgian beer – and three reasons why it’s so famous
Belgium’s brewing landscape evolved across rural farmland, small towns and monasteries, mushrooming around communities and instilling a resistance to the mass production techniques that took hold much more quickly in neighboring countries. Here are some of the reasons Belgium’s local beer culture evolved into a global phenomenon:
Geography
To Belgium’s west is France and its myriad winemakers, from whom Belgian brewers absorbed knowledge about the microbiological benefits of oak aging in large foeders. To the country's east lies Germany, where technical proficiency in lager fermentation and yeast management influenced quality control in Belgian brewing. And to the north, just across the channel, sits England, influencing both brewing and hop growing in Belgium, particularly after WWI.
This mishmash of influences (and the fact that Belgium has been ruled by various regimes) encouraged Belgians to develop practical workarounds and create new and unique beers.
Regionality
Despite its relatively small size, Belgium's beer diversity impresses even the most experienced brewheads. This begs the question, why so many regional specialities? In the early to mid-19th century, the average Belgian brewery was very small, mostly because there was a tax incentive to remain so. Rather than packaging beer, they were selling beer from wooden barrels directly to consumers in their own pubs.
In 1845, there were 3089 breweries in Belgium – today, there are just around 380. As a result, production and consumption has stayed local, preserving distinctive varieties of yeast and maintaining the unique character of a town’s beer style. This limited reach is the reason why Lambic beer is still found in the Pajottenland and the Senne Valley, why Oud Bruin production remains strongest in South West Flanders and why Saison is still most associated with the province of Henegouwen.
Ingredients and process
Belgian yeasts kick off a pronounced range of flavor and aroma compounds when compared to yeasts from other countries. Because of these compounds, Delirium Tremens evokes the essence of pears and oranges, Chimay Bleue tastes like figs and prunes, and Sint Bernardus Wit embraces the zest of pepper and clove.
And Belgians are not afraid to add flavors to their beer, either, whether it entails emptying their spice cabinet of bitter orange, coriander and grains of paradise, or throwing in fruits such as cherries, raspberries, or apricots.
Glassware in Belgium: the theater of Belgian beer
Presentation functions as a key element of Belgian beer culture, particularly when it comes to glassware – it’s one part marketing, one part theater, and one part attempt to maximize the beer experience. From goblet to tulip and from shaker to stange, a lot goes into the decision: the level of alcohol, desired serving temperature, aromatic qualities, level of carbonation, and handling dynamics.
There are also practical considerations: how easy a glass is to clean, how “stackable” it is, and of course, how much it costs. The resulting array of available glassware includes beauties like the bulbous Kasteel chalice from Brouwerij Van Honsebrouck in Izegem, the ridged Ronceva stem of Palm’s Cornet glass, or the curvaceous, inwardly tapered vase of Brugge Tripel.
One innovative feature that has become increasingly popular in Belgian glassware is the nucleation point, an etched mark on the bottom of the inside of the glass that helps release the carbonation by creating a steady stream of bubbles emanating from the nucleated pattern to the top of the beer. Take a moment to notice these bespoke nucleation designs at the bottom of the next glass of Belgian beer you drink. But figure out a way to remove the beer from the glass first.
The seven styles of Belgian beer
Belgium has a rich and diverse line-up of indigenous beer styles. While there are many variations within each one – and much over-lapping between them – certain widely regarded traditional categories help drinkers understand what to expect from a beer’s flavor profile:
1. Abbey-style or monastic ale
There are six Trappist breweries in Belgium, all brewing different styles of beer (Belgian Pales Ales, Tripels, Dubbels, Quadrupels, etc). “Trappist” is not a style, then, but an appellation tied to the fact that brewing takes place inside the walls of a Cistercian Abbey under the supervision of monks, with the proceeds of beer sales going back to the community. These beers have inspired a whole wave of “Abbey beers,” often bottle-conditioned ales with pronounced yeast profiles, high carbonation, and plenty of alcohol. Many are produced by commercial breweries and have no affiliation with an Abbey, although some breweries license the name from a monastery.
Belgian Blond Ales have a subtle citrus and spice yeast complexity, with a degree of malty sweetness and a soft finish. Golden Strong Ales share these yeast flavors and malty mouthfeel but often showcase more hop character, more alcohol, drier finishes, and even more intense carbonation.
Saisons are a family of refreshing, dry, hoppy, and fairly bitter Belgian ales. They’re often highly carbonated, with aromas and flavors of citrus and pepper. Saisons are “provision” ales from Wallonia, the southern region of Belgium. While the origin story to Saison has been disputed, some claim that the beers were produced as an economic necessity for farms who had to retain and occupy their saisonnière (seasonal) workers during the off-season – those saisonnières brewed during the winter and quenched their thirst with the beers in the summer as they toiled the land.
Created during an early-1900s competition to come up with a regional specialty beer that competed with imported British ales and continental lagers, Spéciale Belges are malty, average-strength beers with a red or copper color. There’s a subtle fruitiness from the yeast and a bready (sometimes toasty) malt character, but overall they’re known to be well-balanced and easy-drinking.
Belgian wheat beers (also “white beers” or “witbiers”) are pale, hazy beers brewed using 30-60% of raw wheat. Coriander seed and dried Curaçao orange peel are often added to accentuate the mildly fruity-spicy character of the witbier yeast. Belgian wheat beers are delicate, moderate-strength ales known for their refreshing qualities during the summer.
Oud Bruin is a family of reddish-brown or brown beers with a caramel-chocolate malt flavor and a red-fruit complexity. They are often both sweet and sour, and sometimes present with a dry, tannic finish like a vintage red wine.
Lambic is a spontaneously fermented wheat beer aged on wood. No yeast is pitched by the brewer. Instead, the yeast and bacteria in the vicinity of the brewery transform it into beer. Lambics are blended into Geuzes to become very refreshing, highly carbonated, and pleasantly sour beers which are often complex, oaky, and fruity. Brewers commonly blend Lambic with fruit, particularly cherries, raspberries and apricots.
